Why was my content removed for copyright?

Last Updated: Aug 11, 2017 02:51PM PDT

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) requires Quizlet to remove access to study sets that are reported as copyright infringing by a copyright holder or publisher. Accordingly, when Quizlet receives a notice from a publisher claiming that your set was infringing on their intellectual property rights under the DMCA, a Quizlet admin will disable access to that set.

Quizlet is committed to protecting intellectual property rights of third parties, and posting content that violates someone's intellectual property rights is a violation of our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. While we understand that people make mistakes, Quizlet will terminate the accounts of users who repeatedly violate this policy as required by the DMCA.

If you feel that this removal is the result of a mistake or misidentification, or believe that you have the rights to share this material due to a license or fair use, we're very sorry for any inconvenience that this removal has caused you, your students or your classmates. If this is the case, there are a couple of different solutions you can choose to pursue.

If you know the publisher, you can consider reaching out to the person or people who requested its removal directly to seek clarification on why it was removed or to explain how you are using Quizlet to learn or teach. If the publisher rescinds their DMCA claim, we will restore access to your content.

You can also consider submitting a DMCA counter notice to us. When we receive a DMCA counter notice, we forward it to the copyright holder who originally requested your content be removed. The copyright holder then has 14 days to file an action seeking a court order to keep the content removed. If they do not take this action, Quizlet will restore access to the content in question at the end of this time period.

Filing a DMCA counter notice is a serious matter that can have significant legal and financial consequences, so you may want to consider seeking advice from an attorney if you are not sure whether or not you have rights to share this material.

While we are not in a position to provide legal advice on copyright issues, you can contact us with further questions about our policy, or a specific removal.

If you wish to submit a counter notice, you can find more information about that process here.
